Intro. A university launching a new autonomous driving track needed a lab that could scale: dozens of identical cars, one semester, measurable learning outcomes. VRX RACING’s Donkey Car kits became the backbone of the course.
Challenge. For a course with 200 students, hardware consistency is everything — one misaligned wheel or a flaky servo stalls an entire lab session. Faculty time was limited, so kits had to work out of the box with the standard Raspberry Pi and camera stack, and failed parts had to be replaceable within the same week.
Solution. VRX delivered mass-produced Donkey Car chassis kits: frame, steering, drivetrain and wheels shipped ready to assemble, with four-wheel alignment and steering calibration done at the factory. The kits stay fully compatible with the open-source Donkey Car software stack, with sensor mounting and wiring pre-designed. A spare-parts buffer and same-week replacement service kept lab sessions running.
Results.
50+ kits delivered for one semester; students went from assembly to lane-keeping with a simple neural network within four weeks.
Kits were retained by the lab for thesis and competition work.
80 more units were ordered the following year.
